Abstract
As suggested by its name, the water-soluble B group vitamin, folic acid, is abundant in green, leafy vegetables and many other fresh foods. Its efficacy in the prevention of neural tube birth defects has resulted in legislation to permit folate fortification of processed foods and related health claims on food labels. It may have wider benefits in terms of prevention of chronic disease thanks to its effect on plasma homocysteine levels.
