Digital Pastoral Service: Using Technology in Urban Pastoral Ministry

Abstract

Although Indonesia and other countries have returned to face-to-face worship, a recent study shows that urban churches in Indonesia continue to use technology in their pastoral care. This paper explores the use of digital technology in urban pastoral care, particularly the challenges and opportunities that arise from this approach. The study used qualitative methods with a pastoral case study design involving in-depth interviews with pastors and an analysis of the phenomenon of digital pastoral care. The results show that, despite technical constraints and privacy concerns, technology helps pastors reach congregations that are difficult to reach physically. Online streaming platforms, social media, and church apps enable churches to reach their congregants despite physical limitations. This makes services accessible to people who may not be positioned to attend in person due to various issues. Digital services can be custom-made to attend to various needs, and allow for congregants’ virtual participation in worship activities, nurturing inclusivity for an assorted congregation. The study concludes that digitalization of church services can optimize service accessibility but still requires a balance with traditional local cultures.
