Abstract

Spall strength of the 12Cr18Ni10Ti steel (analog of AISI 321H, 316, and 304L stainless steel), as well influence of its structure and chemical composition were studied in a series of VISARinstrumented symmetrical planar shock experiments with the initial sample temperature ranging from 290 K to 750 K. The shock-loaded samples were recovered for further metallographic examination. Optical microscopy was used to study transverse cross-sections of the recovered samples while the spall-fracture surface was examined using a scanning electron microscope. Phase composition of recovered samples was studied by means of X-ray diffraction analysis. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.
