Low diet in oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, polyols fermentable and quality of life in patients with irritable bowel syndrome in Colombia

Abstract

Introduction: A growing body of evidence has pointed out the effectiveness of a diet low in oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols fermentable (FODMAPs) in patients with IBS. However, non local studies to estimate the effects of this strategy on symptoms and health related quality of life (HRQL) in IBS patients have been conducted in Colombia or Latin America. Objective: To determine the effect of a diet low in FODMAPs on quality of life and symptoms severity in patients with IBS in Colombia. Materials and methods: Clinical and demographic information of all patients was collected at the time of inclusion, immediately after, a trained interviewer applied the IBS- QoL survey to estimate the quality of life of patients and then the intensity of the symptoms was evaluated through an analogue visual scale, before and after the starting of the diet low in FODMAPs. Results: Fifty subjects were available to final analysis. An increase in all scales of IBS-QoL (average increase in overall summary [14.7 points, 95% CI 9.4 to 20.1; p < 0.001] and a significant reduction in all symptoms (- 19.8 mm [P < 0.001 23.4 mm 16.2 mm 95% CI) was observed. Sex, age, body mass index, socioeconomic status and the health care provider were not associated with improvement in HRQOL. 7 Conclusion: A low diet in FODMAPs reduces symptoms and improves quality of life in IBS colombian patients. Controlled studies taking in account other factors linked to the severity of IBS are warranted.
