Abstract

Problem statement: Many previous studies tried to define and put specific measurements for dental arches dimension in different ethnics groups. However, these studies may be specific to an ethnic group and cannot always be applied to other ethnic types. The aim of this study: is to obtain specific dental arch dimensions for Malaysian Malay ethnic groups and compare between both genders. Approach: Involved clinical examination, collection and analysis of 60 dental cast of Malaysian Malay subjects from pure ethnic group (30 males and 30 females, 20-24 years old). All dental landmarks were located and determined and subsequently measurements had been done according to specific points have been selected. Statistical analysis were done using t-test. Results: Dental arch dimension were established in normal occlusion for Malaysian Malay ethnic group in this study. No significant difference was observed in arch dimensions between male and female of Malaysian Malay. Conclusion: These measurement should be considered during treatment, especially in prosthodontics and orthodontics where arch dimension can be modified appreciably. © 2011 Science Publications.
