Abstract

Domesticated pigs may be good surgical candidates for femoral fracture repair. • A lateral surgical approach to the porcine femur provides excellent accessibility to its diaphysis. • Lack of a third trochanter in pigs facilitates retraction of the superficial gluteal muscle and provides a smooth plating surface. • Massive soft tissue in the area over the femur, extensive production of callus, and protective behavior by pigs enhance internal fixation stability.
