Abstract
Background. Hypertension is a major problem in India and globally. Its prevalence is increasing amongst urban and rural population particularly among elderly subjects. Methods. Internet search and discussion with friends. Results. The prevalence of hypertension rises with age and the complications secondary to hypertension also accumu-late with time. Amongst the various causes of hypertension in elderly population, isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) is the commonest cause which is associated with increased risk of outcomes as stroke, congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease etc. Also, there are other age related changes in cardiovascular system. A thorough clinical and investigative work is necessary in elderly. Besides pharmacological therapy, life style modification should be an integral part of the treatment regime. Conclusions. Hypertension is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among elderly population. Treatment goals in the elderly are the same as for general population; however strict control is of great importance.
