Abstract

The theory has been developed that allows reliable calculation of fatigue limit in metals with surface cracks. The theory based on intermolecular interaction may explain the phenomena of metal flow and shear rupture, elastic hysteresis and elastic aftereffect, tensile fracture, fatigue fracture under variable loads, etc. The theory shows that the application of the concept of uniform elastic solid bodies as applied to real objects may result in an error excluding cases when crack tip radius much exceeds crystallite size. Formulas for stress calculation are given.
