Abstract

Part 1 of the Local Government Act 2000 provides for the first time a clear statutory basis for councils' role in community leadership. Many of the issues facing local communities today - health, community safety, the environment, social inclusion, unemployment, regeneration - can only be tackled effectively if the wide variety of public, private and voluntary sector organisations involved at local level work together. No single organisation acting alone has the complete answer - but working together gives us the best chance to maximise our combined effort, avoid duplication and make the greatest impact.
