Abstract
This document deals with definitions, procedures and terminology for the quantity pH which is of wide interest for chemists, biologists and engineers. It is the result of discussions since 1977 within JUPAC and related discussions in other international bodies. It constitutes in the definition of pH scales a compromise which recognises the advantages of both the previously endorsed multistandard approach and that based on the defin- ition of a single standad with associated operational standards.
