Abstract
This paper studies the Beaker phenomenon in the Middle Basin of the Guadiana River (Southern Spain) prin- cipally on the basis of the distribution of the pottery and the analysis of the archaeological contexts at macro-territorial and semi-micro scales. We present a synthesis of the develop- ment and problems surrounding research into this phenome- non at a European scale. In contrast with the generally wide- spread and recognised funerary association of the Beaker phenomenon, in our study area it appears to be related with uses and processes of a different nature. On the basis of the evidence currently available, we defend the idea of the re- strictive prestige value of this pottery type and we suggest the close relationship of beakers with strategies of political cli- ents promoted by part of the dominant sector of these human groups and communities.
