Abstract

After giving a descriptive definition of megaesophagus attention is paid to the occurrence, the possible causes and pathogeneses, the clinical history and diagnosis, age, breed and sex of the horses with megaesophagus, and the prognosis. The most important characteristics of megaesophagus are summarized in two tables referring to 11 cases published in the literature and 18 own cases. Finally some conclusions based on published as well as not published own cases are given. © 2006 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
