Abstract

This paper provides a comprehensive review of the use of synthetic aperture radar for oceanographic applications. It summarizes the current state of the art, covering research and operational aspects of the various applications: ocean wave imaging, solitary waves, ocean currents, sea floor topography, oil spill detection, ship and wake detection, wind speed and direction as well as other wind related phenomena. The extensive references throughout the review can serve as starting point for a more intensive study of the ocean by novice and expert alike. Copyright © 2008 by Bellwether Publishing, Ltd.
