integration through production: the use of zonation in Espinar 1

Abstract

This article analyzes several common themes in ecological and economic anthropology, particularly the emphasis on systems of distribution and the use of normative models of action. The applications of a recent theory in Latin American anthropology, the “verticality model,” have been limited by these shared assumptions. Data from Espinar, a province in southern highland Peru, show the importance of systems of production and material constraints on action.
