Abstract

Antipyretic paracetamol, or acetaminophen is a popular pharmaceutical in the global market. However, some countries have limited capacity to produce their own need of this drug due to several reasons. Indonesia for example has been struggling to achieve self - sufficiency of paracetamol as more than 90 % of its producing materials are still imported. In response to the national research priority, in which paracetamol is included, Indonesian scholars have been dedicating studies for paracetamol process development. In this article, an overview of paracetamol processing development, including its related studies conducted by Indonesian scientists is presented. The studies mainly have been dealing with reaction engineering and crystallizations. In addition, several student reports have been carried out to investigate commercial scale paracetamol production in terms of technical and economic feasibilities.
