Abstract
Lolium perenne plants from 2 of the 25 ecotype collections from Tohoku and Kanto and from 13 of 18 turf-type cultivars had intercellular mycelium resembling that of Acremonium lolii within the leaf sheaths. A second endophyte, in 3 of the ecotype collections, resembled the Gliocladium-like fungus reported from New Zealand. No evidence was obtained of the presence of these endophytes in plants of 4 pasture-type cultivars examined.
