Abstract

Cymbopogon citratus (DC) Staf is widely used in traditional medicine in Cuba and in many other countries of the Caribbean region. Among its atributable popular properties are those related to analgesic and anti-inflamatory actions. Main objective of present work was to validate pharmacological effects above mentioned of a fluid extract from C. citratus based on ethanol-water (30 %). To study anti-inflamatory effects, model of cotton induced granuloma in rats was used, as well as hot dishes in mice for analgesic activity. Doses of 160, 320, and 480 mg/kg/day per os were given, and indomethacin (10 mg/kg/day per os), like a positive control. Extract from C. citratus wasn't effective in any of the studied models. There fore neither supposed anti-inflamatory actions nor analgesic ones were validated.
