State of war related sites in Okinawa prefecture according to the comprehensive research of war related sites and modernization period heritage

Abstract

Comprehensive research of war related sites in Okinawa Prefecture was conducted from 1998 to 2006 and comprehensive research of modernization heritage in 2002 and 2003 was conducted by the prefectural board of education. According to the result of the research, characteristics of war related sites in Okinawa prefecture are as follows, 1) Most of the war related sites have circumstances of battles during the Battles of Okinawa 2) Most of the war related sites are underground structures and structures on the ground are limited because of the destruction by ground battles.
