Abstract

Although cycling is becoming increasingly relevant in urban mobility systems and the modal share is growing, many aspects of cycling mobility remain unknown. Concepts and methods from GIS are regarded as suitable for investigating cycling mobility in a holistic setting. A better systemic understanding and opportunities for knowhow extraction are expected from applying the idea of a Geographical Information Observatory (GIO) to cycling mobility. Within the research project Bicycle Observatory – On the Pulse of Cycling, requirements, facilitators and barriers for establishing an integrated, spatially differentiated and temporally continuous observation of cycling mobility as well as potential information gains are investigated.
