Abstract

The aim of this article is to examine the urban environment of Rio de Janeiro as delineated in the A Semana chronicles by Machado de Assis. The period, between 1892 and 1897, is an important moment in the life of the city when the initial transformations, which would later be accomplished by the mayor, Pereira Passos (1902-1906), appear.
