Abstract
Sleep is a basic physiological manifestation to maintain a good quality of life, for this reason it is necessary to recognize that its restorative effect allows humans to adequately perform their activities during the day. In the present work we will address different aspects related to research in this field. In the first place, we will deal with the functions that sleep performs, considering as one of the most important the restoration and conservation of energy. The circadian rhythm plays a regulatory function of sleep-wakefulness that carries out a homeostatic action in the human body. Sleep has different phases (REM and NREM), within which the consolidation of learning and memory occurs. Subsequently, the substances and neurotransmitters that participate in the sleep process will be mentioned.
