Abstract
There are many evaluations for assessing English‐speaking patients but few standardised instruments exist in other languages. A description of the methodology and procedures for validating the translation of the ‘Role Checklist’ is presented. A research study was conducted, with individuals having a severe mental health disability, using the Role Checklist as the instrument to be validated into French. This checklist assesses productive roles in adult life by indicating the individual's perception of his or her past, present, future roles. The results regarding the reliability and validity of the French version will be discussed. Although the overall results of the French version are good, part 2 of the instrument should be used with caution. Copyright © 1995 Whurr Publishers Ltd.
