Abstract
This study was designed to determine whether self-esteem and body image perception differed among orthopedi cally handicapped and normal adolescents. Data were collected from 55 orthopedically handicapped males and 123 normal males using Self-Esteem Scale and Body image Questionnaire. The results show that there were no significant differences on the self-esteem scores between groups but body image scores ofthe handicapped males in two groups were higher than the normal femalesAlthough it was found that a positive and significant correlation exist between self-esteem and body image perceptions of nonhandicapped males, no such correlation was foundfor handicapped males. The most predictive body aspects of self-esteem were genital organs, height, legs and sports ability in nonhandicapped males, and legs, skin, shoulders, amount of hair on theface and scalp in orthopedically handicapped males.
