Abstract

The author analyzed the regional characteristics of fishery in the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Region, which suffered from severe damages in the 2011 East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. The recovery projects are undertaking in every community there now. The author believe the recovery processes would defer by the type of fishery before the 2011 disaster. This report provides some basic knowledge about the regional characteristics of fishery in the Tsunami damaged area in Tohoku by firstly map making of some important statistics including type of fishery, type of management, amount of sales, situation of side business, and labor characteristics. In the next, a principle component analysis applied to the data set of 77 fishery districts and 23 variables produces main four types of fishery including i) Main Port Town of Fishery, ii) Coastal village with self-supportable aquaculture, iii) Coastal village with aquaculture as side business, and iv) Coastal village of partnership management mainly in set-net fishery. In the final, the author give a consideration as to how the recovery processes will differ by the regional type of fishery.
