Abstract

This volume is devoted to a comprehensive and current review of all aspects of obesity and the eating disorders—including the interface of these with factors affecting weight regulation. Section I covers such factors as genetic influences and physiological, psychological, and energy related factors. Section II focuses on the importance of dieting in our world today; social and cultural influences and their relation to body image and the eating disorders are covered in some detail, as is the entire controversy over dieting itself. Section III highlights the issue of measurement and covers everything from assessments of body energy stores to food intake, energy expenditure, and measures of psychopathology. Sections IV through VII cover all aspects of the eating disorders including history, clinical features, theories of pathogenesis and complications, as well as detailed views on approaches to treatments. Sections VIII and IX cover obesity in a similar fashion. This book contains information on all aspects of eating disorders and obesity so that professionals with clinical or research questions in this area [and students] will have the information at hand in one volume.
