Abstract

The electrochemistry and chemistry of sulfur in molten AlCl//3-NaCl has been studied extensively, partly because of potential use of positive oxidation states of sulfur as cathode-active materials in secondary molten salt batteries. However, there has been only a brief voltammetric study of sulfur in AlCl//3-containing room temperature melts. The authors have examined the electrochemistry and chemistry of sulfur in AlCl//3-BPC (BPC EQUVLNT N-(n-butyl) pyridinium chloride) melts of basic (BPC-rich) and acidic (AlCl//3-rich) compositions.
