Abstract

We show that if we assume the existence of a disordered cosmic magnetic field at recombination, then, provided the field varies on a comoving scale corresponding to a typical galactic mass, we can account for the existence of galaxies, galactic angular momenta, and galactic magnetic fields. The theory predicts the existence of a present day intergalactic magnetic field B 1G < 10" 9 gauss varying on a characteristic length scale ~ 1 Mpc.
