Fungal infections of the skin

Abstract

Superficial fungal infections are extremely common and three groups of fungi have evolved to fill this ecological niche. These fungi, the tinea-causing dermatophytes, Candida albicans and pityriasis versicolor-causing lipophilic yeasts, are discussed, along with a bacterial infection which closely resembles fungal infections.
