In Defense of a Hybrid Model for EFL Vocabulary Instruction

Abstract

According to Valsiljevic (2008) Inferring word meaning from context was behind the other models in both productive and receptive uses of the target words, with the impact in productive use being more pronounced. [...]the result of this study verifies the use of reading plus as the strategy of lexical inferencing as Vasiljevic's (2008) findings did because lexical inferencing results were lower in comparison with those of the Hybrid Model one. Paribakht and Wesche (1997) indicated that lexical inferencing can lead to recognize a large amount of words from text but it does not guarantee the development of complex knowledge of new learnt words. [...]they (2000) used reading plus strategy which caused increasing elaboration and strengthening of different dimensions of word knowledge.
