Abstract
This article explores several issues related to the study of students' “academic” careers and the cumulative impact of their learning experiences across grade levels. Building upon recent work in cognitive psychology, the paper develops a conception of academic “tasks” for the study of inter‐grade connections. Areas for future research are identified.
