Abstract

An abdominal hernia is the protrusion of a viscus or tissue through a defect in the muscular wall of the abdomen. The hernia may present as a lump that increases with elevation of abdominal pressure or acutely with pain and symptoms of obstruction. Most hernias are diagnosed with clinical history and examination. An ultrasound or computed tomography (CT) scan may augment the clinical assessment. Symptomatic hernias need to be surgically repaired.
