Abstract
It is important that opioids are not prescribed long‐term for chronic primary pain, owing to their adverse effects, risk of dependence and limited evidence of benefit. This article discusses strategies for tapering opioids in patients with chronic non‐cancer pain in primary care, emphasising the need for a multifaceted approach, incorporating both patient and prescriber behaviour change.
