Abstract

We report results for the first electron momentum spectroscopy (EMS) investigation into the 4d5/2, 3/2 core states of xenon. Experimental binding energy spectra were measured over the momentum range from 0.3 to 1.9 au with the derived 4d cross section demonstrating the superiority of a distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) calculation over the corresponding plane wave Born approximation (PWBA) calculation. The present result also indicated that the xenon Hartree-Fock (HF) wavefunction may be inadequate, in that in its representation of the 4d orbital it was found to be not sufficiently diffuse in coordinate space. © 1994 IOP Publishing Ltd.
