GEOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF ABNORMAL FORMATION PRESSURES

Abstract

Occurrence of abnormal pressures in #Aug 1969 p 961-6; Occurrence of abnormal pressures in Gulf Basin is direct result of structural and depositional history; genesis of abnormal pressures in rock unit during geologic time is controlled by environment of deposition on paleocontinental shelf and slope, geometry and lithology of sediments, regional and local faulting, basin hinge lines, burial and compaction and subsequent structural deformation; when these aspects are defined, related to each other, and associated with abnormal pressure, geologic significance of abnormal pressure is established.
