Intervenções psicoterapêuticas de enfermagem NIC na prática clínica em Portugal: Um estudo descritivo

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Regulation No 129/2011 states that specialized nurses in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing (MHPN) have the competence to provide care psychotherapeutic. However, this Regulation does not specify which psychotherapeutic interventions can be performed by them nor even analyse the current national reality in this domain. AIM: To identify the frequency of implementation of NIC psychotherapeutic interventions in clinical practice, the relationship perceived by nurses between training and the knowledge and skills necessary for performing these interventions, its usual form of execution, and the factors perceived by nurses as facilitators and hindering the implementation of NIC psychotherapeutic interventions in clinical practice. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study. A non-probability snowball sampling was used for collecting data from specialized nurses in MHPN. The total number of participants was 83 nurses. Data collection took place between May and June 2014 and was conducted via an online questionnaire. RESULTS: Counselling was pointed out as the NIC psychotherapeutic intervention which is most performed by nurses in clinical practice, as the one for which they consider to have had more training, and as the one that is performed more autonomously. The individual motivation is pointed out as the main factor for facilitating the execution of psychotherapeutic interventions in clinical practice. CONCLUSIONS: Aiming to increase the implementation of psychotherapeutic interventions in clinical practice, a greater investment in addressing these interventions to the training level seems to be essential, as well as taking measures in order to increase the individual motivation of nurses and to ensure the existence of safe staffing
