Abstract

Video game addiction, sleep quality and psychological distress in adolescents and young adults The purpose of this research was to examine levels of addiction to video games and test a structural equation model to determine if addiction to them predicted levels of sleep and psychological distress. A sample of 612 young male adults was constituted, with an average age of 21 years (SD = 2.95). They completed a demographic questionnaire, the GASA questionnaire, the sleep questionnaire, and the DASS-21. The results indicated high levels of addiction to video games, age introduced a difference due to higher levels in the adolescent group compared to that of young adults. The structural model presented an adequate fit and addiction predicted greater sleep difficulties and less psychological well-being; Sleep quality was also a significant predictor of discomfort. The discussion explores the implications of these findings and provides suggestions for future research.
