Abstract
Identifies principles of organization that allow attention (ATT) to function as a unified system for the control of mental processing. Fundamental principles of the ATT system of the brain are illustrated by dividing the ATT system into subsystems that perform different but interrelated functions. Three major functions prominent in cognitive accounts of ATT are addressed: orienting to sensory events, detecting signals for focal (conscious) processing, and maintaining a vigilant or alert state.
