Abstract

Given the global context and trade patterns outlined in Chapter 1, this chapter telescopes down to developments in the Indonesian seaweed industry at the national level. It begins by providing industry-wide context and explores governance structures and Indonesian government interest in the seaweed industry. It then outlines the production centre, including the early growth period, current production structures of the Indonesian seaweed industry, and production policy settings and geographic distribution of seaweed production across Indonesia. It then explores the Indonesian seaweed marketing sector, including market hierarchy, characteristics, prices, and policy. This is followed by a description of the processing sector, examining foreign investment in seaweed processing in Indonesia, current processing structures, and current capacity utilisation by the processing sector. The chapter concludes by examining cross-cutting policies in marine zoning, investment, food safety, and product diversification.
