Background: Diabetic education is a key point of the treatment of this disease, with a cost-benefit ratio that significantly reduces the chronic complications of the diabetes. Objective: Validate through factor analysis the reliability and contents of the Spanish version (Campo, et al., 1989) of the University of Michigan in a Venezuelan population. Methods: The survey was applied in 100 patients type 1-2 diabetes, 12-70 years-old, both genders. The data was showed descriptively and statistically processed as the internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) and the factor structure. Results: The analysis of the principal components indicate a structure who comprised 4 factors that explained 32.9% of the total variance. The Cronbach's alpha was 0.8, representing an excellent reliability. Conclusion: The Spanish version of the diabetes knowledge survey has proven to be reliable and valid for application in subsequent research in the Venezuelan population.
