Abstract
The vast majority of the world's 42 million blind are needlessly impaired. Epidemiologic studies are providing important insights into the cause of cataracts and provision of surgical services; ecologic approaches to the control of trachomatous corneal scarring; treatment and prevention of onchocerciasis; and early diagnosis and treatment of xerophthalmia among others. Continued research and application of existing knowledge can have a dramatic impact on the sight and lives of millions of people. Copyright © 1988, Wiley Blackwell. All rights reserved
