The ecology of nothofagus solandri

Abstract

This paper is divided into three sections. The first is on individual tree growth in Nothofagus solandri . Studies on phenology and height, diameter, and volume growth are described, and variation in the results is related to changes in altitude and other site factors. The second section is on stand growth. The structure, mortality, replacement, and volume growth are described, and dry matter production in simple monotypic Nothofagus solandri stands is calculated. Examples from more complex conditions are described to illustrate variation. In the third section, the findings of Parts 1 to 4 of “The ecology of Nothofagus solandri ” aro combined to explain which facets of the life history of the species permit it to occupy such a wide range of habitats, and which facets are limiting to its distribution. Finally, in the third section, the practical implications of the study are briefly outlined.
