Abstract

In assemblies of metal nanoparticles small random perturbations are predicted to lead to (a) a statistical energy level distribution around the Fermi level within the assembly and (b) local electron density fluctuations within each particle. 195Pt relaxation experiments on monodisperse 1.2-nm-diam Pt cores in molecular metal clusters Pt309Phen*36O30 agree with these predictions, whereas for the NMR line shape the presence of (b) is obscured by additional contributions from surface effects. © 1999 The American Physical Society.
