Diversificación no agropecuaria, adopción de telefonía móvil e ingresos en el México rural

Abstract

This paper studies the relationship between participation in non-farm employment and mobile phone adoption in the rural sector of Mexico. With data from the National Household Income and Expenditure Survey (ENIGH 2016), the impact of participation in non-farm employment on mobile phone adoption is analyzed, using a probit model of endogenous selection. Likewise, the joint effect of work in non-farm activities and cellphone use on family income is examined using a control function model. The results show that the incursion into the non-farm sector increases the probability of using the mobile phone. Similarly, work in activities off-farm, as well as the adoption of cellphones increase household income. These findings suggest digital inclusion and employment policies to improve the standard of living of the rural population.
