Abstract
The article treats the market (or tianguis) as an economic institution in which several different forms of goods exchange intermingle, forming a hybrid system of predominantly monetary exchange. These transactions are described ethnographically to reveal that economic reality is mediated by the sociocultural features of subjects whose function is primarily economic.
