Because current techniques of cataract surgery preserve the posterior capsule and zonules, it might be expected that fewer retinal detachments would result in pseudophakic patients. We evaluated the frequency of clinical factors associated with rhegmatogenous retinal detachments, and found that nearly half of all primary detachments occur in pseudophakic patients. Patients with complications of cataract extraction make up a significant percentage of pseudophakic retinal detachments.
