Abstract

The genetics of in vitro response of immature barley embryos was examined by means of diallel analysis. Both mean expression and sensitivity to 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2, 4-D) were shown to be under genetic control. Additive and non-additive factors were involved in the control of in vitro response. The relative importance of these parameters was shown to change with increasing concentrations of 2, 4-D. Response in vitro to media containing 2, or more, mg l^-1 of 2, 4-D was characterised by large reciprocal differences. The implications of these findings for the manipulation of barley genotypes in culture are discussed. © 1987, The Genetical Society of Great Britain.
