The Study of the Mexican Narcoculture: Progress and Approaches

Abstract

This paper contributes to ordination of the academic production about Mexican narco-culture, particularly by reviewing its progress and evolution, as well as identifying the approaches from which it has been conceptualized. Through documentary research on academic production in articles, chapters and books focused on the subject, we found that there is a wide area of research that not only studies symbolic forms, aesthetics and lifestyles, but also analyzes the cultural dynamics linked to drug trafficking as a transnational company and its relationship with the living conditions of thousands of people in Mexico, who have been inserted in this environment. In addition, they contribute to dismantling the simplified version of drug trafficking as a battle between legal and illegal and allow us to understand the drugs as a local cultural product that emerges within the process of neoliberal globalization.
