Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia. It is caused by a defect in the secretion of insulin, in its action or boths. The symptoms of hyperglycemia are: poliyuria, polydipsia, lost of weight, sometimes polyphagia and blurred vision. The acute picture of non treated hyperglicemia is represented by ketoacidosis or non-ketotic hyperosmolar syndrome. Long-term complications of diabetes mellitus may include: retinopathy, nephropathy, peripheric neuropathy, autonomic neuropathy. The patients have increased incidence of atherosclerosis, cardiac disease, periferia arterial disease and cerebrovascular disease. In some patients, hipertension and alterations in the lipidis metabolism may also be found. © Copyright Moreira Jr. Editora.
