Abstract

Eighteen strains of Leishmania infantum were found in 8,329 phlebotomine sandflies dissected during two surveys in the Priorat region (Catalonia, Spain). Three zymodèmes were isolated and typed by isoenzyme analysis, namely MON-1 from four Phlebotomus ariasi and one P. perniciosus, MON-29 from seven P. ariasi and five P. perniciosus and MON-77 from one P. perniciosus. A fourth zymodème (MON-105) was isolated from a laboratory bred sandfly (P. perniciosus which was permitted to feed on a leishmanial dog from which three zymodemes (MON-1), MON-77 and MON-105) had previously been cultured.
