Abstract

This paper is the first of two dealing thoroughly with the presence of an airfoil in shear flow. The method to be adopted is illustrated by means of a simple example which also serves as a comparison with the results of other authors. The case of the general cylinder fixed at an arbitrary point in the field of flow is considered next, and the components of the force and the couple are obtained. The transformation is then modified so that the airfoil is either thin and curved, or else tapering and straight, and the general results reduced accordingly. © 1951 Oxford University Press.
